Runway renovations fall into the category of high-complexity construction projects. Since they are the key asset of an airport and often need to be available 24/7, these projects typically have very stringent time and quality targets, and any unexpected deviation of the plan must be addressed diligently to meet them. Safety in the airport environment is paramount at all times, but special focus is given to planning for and executing specific situations such as runway renovations. Safety studies are key in assessing the impact of the renovation project on airfield operations and planning of measures to minimise its impact. The safety measures identified are then included in detailed construction plans.
